Solarimetric Stations to Investigate Generation Potential in Brazil
The levels of solar radiation and its potential for generating electric energy have already begun to be evaluated by Eletrosul in three of the states where the company operates. The installation of six measuring units was completed in mid-March, with an investment of about R$ 1.5 million. called the solimetric stations, they integrate enterprises in Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rondônia. This initial phase will continue to involve adjustments to the equipment and data collection system.
The expectation is that from April onwards, the information, which will form the basis of the technical and financial feasibility studies for large-scale generation plants, will begin to be consolidated.
The most appropriate technological alternatives - photovoltaic or solar thermal - will also be analysed. "So far, the prospects for implementation of solar thermal power plants, or CSPs, in Brazil, have been more restricted to the field of research,"noted Franklim Lago, manager of the Eletrosul Generation Engineering Department (DEG). According to him, the company is one of the leading concessionaires in the electricity sector.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the solarimetric stations were installed next to the Uruguayan Converter, in the municipality of the same name, and another one in the area of the Paso San Juan Hydroelectric Power Plant, in Roque Gonzales. In Mato Grosso del Sur, there are three units: next to the Santo Domingo Power Plant, in Agua Clara, and the Dorados and Anastácio substations. In Rondônia, the station was installed in the Porto Velho Collecting Substation area.

Each solarimetric station has equipment for measuring radiation (direct, total and diffuse) and other variables that can interfere with the productivity of a concentrated solar or photovoltaic plant, such as wind direction and intensity, ambient temperature, relative air humidity, atmospheric pressure and rainfall intensity. Photovoltaic panels connected to a battery bank guarantee autonomy in power supply for the operation of the equipment.

The data collected at the solarimetric stations is stored in an electronic device (datalogger) and transmitted to Eletrosul's headquarters in Florianópolis (SC), where the DEG technicians will process and analyse the information using software.
The technicians who will do the basic maintenance of the solimetric stations have undergone training by the supplier, which represents, in Brazil, one of the largest manufacturers of measuring equipment.
